February Insights – Lights, Camera, Growth: Our 2025 Box Office Forecast Predicts a 9% Surge
At Cinelytic, we’ve once again leveraged our powerful bottom-up approach to deliver an early, in-depth look at what’s ahead for the domestic theatrical market. Last November, our team meticulously analyzed the full slate of major 2025 releases, running advanced projections to forecast both annual and monthly Domestic Box Office (DBO) performance. This comprehensive analysis covered 62 major titles set for wide release, with a breakdown of releases by distributor as follows:

2025 Forecasts
After 2024 saw a 3.8% drop in DBO revenue—breaking a three-year post-COVID growth streak that included a 20.9% jump from 2022 to 2023—2025 is poised for a strong comeback. With a stacked film slate and industry confidence improving, momentum is expected to pick up significantly, particularly between Q2 and Q4.
At Cinelytic, our latest data-driven forecast projects US$9.35b in 2025 DBO revenue, marking a 9.1% increase from last year’s underwhelming performance. We’ve further broken this down into detailed monthly projections to give you the most precise outlook on the year ahead. To kick off 2025, check out the graphic below to see how our November 2024 projection for one of last month’s biggest theatrical releases stacked up against actual performance:

Proven Accuracy, Year After Year
As shown in the graphic below, we’re very proud to once again share that we closed out 2024 by achieving over 99% accuracy in relation to our Q4 projections that were made one year prior:

How Do We Do This?
The Cinelytic platform harnesses the power of 19 key project attributes, using our proprietary algorithms and machine learning to perform advanced predictive analyses on major titles. As part of our standard approach, we’ve also incorporated late 2024 major releases that are expected to continue driving box office revenue into early 2025. This includes factoring in a projected share of early 2025 DBO revenue from high-profile year-end titles such as GLADIATOR II, WICKED, MOANA 2, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3, NOSFERATU, and MUFASA: THE LION KING, among others.
What Does Each Forecast Look Like?
Let’s dive into a prime example of Cinelytic’s powerful predictive capabilities using CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, the first of three Marvel Cinematic Universe additions from Walt Disney Studios this year. Utilizing a reported budget of US$180.0m, global P&A estimates totaling US$200.0m, and leveraging critical project attributes that include budget, genre, rating, talent, and IP value to fuel our AI-powered projections, the platform forecasts a total DBO haul of US$243.9m in the base case median scenario. That’s just the beginning—Cinelytic’s platform doesn’t stop at theatrical projections, it also predicts Home Video and TV revenue, driven by real data to provide the most comprehensive outlook:

Based on the anticipated global net revenues totaling US$492.8m (including domestic/international box office, home entertainment, TV net of distribution fees and expenses), the film is projected to result in a significant return (10-year ultimate), with a projected ROI of 229.7% before talent back-end payouts.
Methodology
While the 62 films we’ve closely analyzed are set to dominate the majority of 2025’s DBO, let’s not forget there are plenty more titles on the horizon. To round out our full domestic forecast, we dug into actual performance data from 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024 (we’ve conveniently left the pandemic years behind us). By comparing the top-performing titles each year to the overall DBO, we found that in these four years, the Top 50-60 films accounted for 77%, 91%, 81%, and 85% of total DBO, with an average of 84%. Using that insight, Cinelytic’s 2025 DBO projection lands at the aforementioned and robust US$9.35b—and we’re just getting started.
